Alex Lopez is a Bay Area–based Director of Photography and Producer whose work blends cinematic craft with grounded, human storytelling. Born in Texas and raised with a deep appreciation for authenticity, Alex began his film career in Southern California at the Brooks Institute of Photography, where he trained in advanced lighting, camera operation, and large-scale stage production. Surrounded by Hollywood’s professional infrastructure — including time on the set of Erin Brockovich and exposure to Panavision gear and Technicolor’s post-production workflows — he developed a foundation that balanced technical precision with creative adaptability.
In 2011, Alex began accruing hours toward IATSE Local 600 as a focus puller and stills photographer on feature films and television series. The following year, Valhalla Entertainment — best known for The Walking Dead — hired him to shoot stills for a Native American–made feature documentary in San Francisco. That project brought him to the Bay Area, where he’s been based ever since.
Before dedicating himself full-time to cinematography, Alex worked as a photojournalist, covering major events including the Occupy Movement in Oakland. His work was published in outlets such as The New York Times and The San Francisco Chronicle and earned awards for Best Feature Photo and Best Photo Story. His assignments also brought him into the political sphere, photographing figures such as then–Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and future Vice President Kamala Harris during the Prop 8 rulings.
Today, Alex’s cinematography credits include commercial campaigns for Google, Levi’s, Pfizer, Embark Trucks, and all of Northeastern University’s California campuses, along with collaborations with high-profile NFL and NBA athletes. His work spans narrative films, branded documentaries, and high-budget commercial productions, moving fluidly between multi-camera studio shoots and nimble, on-location storytelling. He also serves as a DIT when projects demand precise on-set color management and workflow oversight.
Alex’s approach is rooted in collaboration and trust. Whether leading a large crew through a tightly orchestrated production or working with a lean team in unpredictable conditions, he creates an environment where cast, crew, and clients feel supported. His combination of technical expertise, adaptability, and respect for the story has made him a reliable creative partner for productions of all sizes.
